Crown imperial | Fritillaria Imperalis Maxima Lutea
This yellow Crown Imperial has been the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit in recognition of its outstanding excellence.
The bright yellow flowers rise majestically from the light green foliage and are topped with a crown of green leaf-like bracts, hence the common name, crown imperial.
A clump of these hardy plants is an impressive sight and quite unchallenging once the bulbs are established although they may take a season to flower after being planted.
There are only two problems I have encountered with these beautiful plants:
Slugs and snails seem to love them but after the first couple of years they seemed to leave them alone.
The smell of the foliage is not the most pleasant and for that reason alone I plant them at the back of the border!
Plant full sun or partial shade in acid or alkaline soil but good drainage is essential, which is one of the reasons that they thrive in my free draining soil.
Height: 150cm
Spread: 45cm
Divide plants August to September.
