Christmas Box | Sarcococca
For most of the year you walk past the Christmas Box without giving it a second glance.
Then between December and March small white flowers appear among the dark green foliage that have a powerful fragrance which more than compensates for the small size of the blooms.
I have mine by the gate from the yard to the drive and it is a pleasure to walk out even on the coldest of days.
Flowers are followed by berries to extend the season of interest.
Sarcococca are Chinese and Himalayan evergreen shrubs in the same family as Buxus, the common box.
Hardy and easy to grow, these small and slow growing shrubs that are broader than they are tall.
Very shade tolerant but also grow well in full sun if the roots are kept consistently moist.
Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit (AGM).
Height: 150cm
