Winter Jasmine | Jasminum Nudiflorum

Winter Jasmine | Jasminium NudiflorumWinter Jasmine is one of those shrubs that we can take for granted. It flowers over a long period and does not take much controlling, happy in full sun or partial shade. Mine grows happily on an east facing wall but I know of two cuttings taken from my Jasmine that are flourishing on a north facing wall.

Jasminum nudiflorum was introduced from China in 1844 and is widely grown as a wall shrub.

It is tolerant of most soil types and reaches a height and spread of 300cm if left unpruned.

It can be allowed to scramble freely over a low wall or up a bank or trained up a vertical framework. Winter jasmine does not twine and so needs tying-in if grown vertically.

The stems are bright green and give an evergreen impression, even in winter when the tiny bright yellow blooms appear from December to March.

Regular pruning keeps bushes under control and can be sheared back as if trimming a hedge.

Take cuttings in May to July.

The Royal Horticultural Society has given it the Award of Garden Merit (AGM).
