Rhododendron Yakushimanum Hybrid
Rhododendron Yakushimanum were introduced to Britain in 1934 from the Japanese Island of Yakushima.
Yaks, as they are known, are a dwarf species that reach a height of 3ft (1m) with a spread of 5ft 1.5m).
The hybrids have an attractive, compact habit which looks good all year, with mid-spring, porcelain-like flowers in a range of colours.
The open funnel shaped flowers of my Yak hybrid start as a deepish pink that fade to near white with a hint of pink.
The broad oval leaves are silvery at first maturing to dark green and are brown felted underneath.
In their native habitat Yaks grows on cool, windswept mountains and are fully hardy.
They will tolerate sunnier sites.
