Rhododendron Luteum

Rhododendron LuteumRhododendron Luteum is a deciduous azalea of open habit that eventually reaches a height of 5ft (2.5m) and spread of 8ft (2.5m).

Luteum is fully hardy with leaves that are oblong to lance shaped.

Bold heavily fragrant funnel shaped yellow blooms appear in spring and later in the year it finishes with a flourish producing autumn foliage that is rich and colourful.

I first encountered this azalea when visiting a wooded garden in Scotland while on a spring holiday. There were several together in a clearing, the colour looked great but the beautiful perfume filled the air.
