Pineapple Broom | Cytisus Battandieri

Pineapple Broom | Cytisus BattandieriI first tried to grow this hardy shrub in the garden soil against a west facing wall with little success.

My second try was against a south facing wall. As my garden does not have a border along the south facing wall I built a large box and filled it with good compost. This helped to provide the well-drained / light soil type that it prefers.

Success! Well worth the effort.

The Pineapple Broom is a tall Moroccan shrub or small tree and was introduced in 1922.

It is best grown with some shelter from cold winds and in full sun, and makes an excellent wall shrub.

It has silky grey-green foliage with golden pea-shaped flowers gathered in large upright cones and has a strong scent of pineapples.

The Royal Horticultural Society has given it its prestigious Award of Garden Merit (AGM).

It can be pruned, but like other brooms if you dare to cut hard back into the old wood it is very reluctant to sprout again. Planting mine in my homemade tub has restricted its growth and they also prefer to be on the drier side than over watered.

Height: 400cm

Spread: 400cm

You can propagate by taking cuttings June to July or plant seeds September to May.
