Nemesia Maritana Fragrant Gem
Fragrant Gem is the right name for this little beauty described as perennial,
half hardy and soft pink in colour. Mine I would say has hit of lilac in the
bloom.
It has an upright and spreading habit, suitable for baskets and or patio containers. I grow mine in pots on the porch of our conservatory, buying one plant and taking cuttings to produce a second pot.
The recommended maintenance is to feed regularly with summer fertilizer and after each flowering trim back to at least one third of the leafy stem for re flowering in three to four weeks. There is always a first time but I have to date not found this necessary as it has flowered profusely all summer.
I leave mine on the porch all winter but bear in mind that the porch, although open on two sides, gives them some protection. At the end of winter I cut them back ready for take off in spring.
One of the pots I did not cut back as it kept good growth and sparse flower most of the winter; it looks really good in mid June, very bushy and covered in flowers. It has to be said that the pot was up against the sheltered south facing wall.
The scent from these two pots of Nemesia Fragrant Gem is stunning and fills the air. In fact the perfume drifts into the conservatory and through to the house.
Highly recommended.
