Fruit Garden Tips for March
Is there anything better than walking up to your own apple trees, pear trees or soft fruit bushes and picking ripe, juicy fruits that have not travelled hundreds or even thousands of miles? These delights do need some care and attention at certain times of the year.
Pruning apple trees, pruning any fruit trees, is one of those tasks that we amateur gardeners tend to forget about but March is a good time to carry out the deed.
Growing strawberries brings its rewards but begin the season by taking care of strawberries.
Following are some fruit garden tips for March courtesy of Dobies.
- Plant fruit trees and soft fruit bushes (such as currants and raspberries), when the soil isn't frozen or waterlogged. To avoid damage from birds cover soft fruit bushes with netting.

For some early flowering and fruiting strawberries you may wish to move any you have in pots into the greenhouse. - Outdoor grape vines should be pruned so that last year's fruited shoots will be shortened therefore encouraging new growth.
- Remove any branches getting in the way and prune large apple and pear trees.
- Check stored apples and pears removing those that show signs of rot or deterioration.
